The Science Learning Center at the University of Houston-Downtown is a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility (2750 sq. ft.) dedicated to the support of science learning and teaching at many levels, all related to a wide variety of UHD science courses and special precollege and teacher professional development programs.

There are three rooms that constitute the SLC:

  • The main computer use area features 30 networked student computers committed to independent student use. These computers are used to access and study from educational software, take electronic quizzes, complete computer-based course assignments, or access the internet for science-related purposes. This area is equipped with a classnet system so that it may be used by classes and so that student work may be monitored.
  • The specimen study area (or tutor lab) is dedicated to the study of non-computer based materials, including maps, fossils, rocks, prepared biological slides, anatomical models, molecular model kits, and science-related videos. Other materials are placed on reserve by professors as needed.
  • The SLC Annex Room is a model electronic classroom with 25 networked computers and a master teacher's console equipped with a document camera for transparent and opaque projection, a CRT projector, a DVD/CD player, a videocassette player, computers, and an interactive touch-screen whiteboard. This classroom may be reserved for UHD-sponsored science activities such as undergraduate classes, teacher professional development and precollege science activities.
