Scholars Academy
The UHD Scholars Academy (SA) is an academically competitive program in the College of Science and Technology (CST) that promotes scholarship and student success for undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Its mission is to increase the number of academically capable students graduating with degrees in the natural, mathematical and computer sciences, and engineering/engineering technology, and to increase the number of those choosing to pursue graduate study in these fields. This competitive program is made possible by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Army Research Office, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Office of Naval Research, Welch Foundation, and UHD Donors.
Scholarship recipients must maintain a minimum GPA each semester and actively participate in UHD Scholars Academy activities as a computer science, mathematics, natural sciences or engineering major in order to be eligible for renewal each semester.
Scholars Academy students are awarded scholarships ranging from $3,200 to $5,000 per academic year. Summer stipends are also given for research participation for specific scholarships. At UH-Downtown, tuition and fees cost about $1,900 a semester for full-time residential students. Scholars may also apply for other types of financial assistance at UHD, such as the TExAS grant.
At UHD, the emphasis is on teaching excellence and student success.
Internships and Graduate School
Undergraduate STEM-related research both on and off-campus is the primary tool used by UCSS/STEM to promote careers in STEM and also the pursuit of graduate degrees in STEM.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program at UHD has the following programs and successes.
GRE prep course: The purpose of this is to help students learn necessary strategies that lead to success in taking the GRE.
Graduate school and internship fair (GSIF): The purpose is to help promote UHD STEM majors to prospective graduate schools and internships. It additionally solved the purpose of showcasing the academic projects undertaken by UHD STEM students.
UHD student research conference (SRC): The statistics indicate that within time span of 4 years (Fall 2001 to Spring 2006) there has been a total of 115 Non STEM Presentation, 226 STEM Presentations and 318 STEM Student Authors/Co Authors.
HUNSTEM Houston Urban Network for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
HUNSTEM is a web based learning community empowering teachers, students, parents, and the broader learning community by integrating math and science learning into every aspect of the education experience.
HUNSTEM is a comprehensive program assisting pre-college students to develop and pursue STEM - related projects outside their formal classroom.
HUNSTEM is unique in its approach because it concentrates on building STEM collaborations as well as providing access to innovative STEM curricula.
HUNSTEM has helped build The Houston GEOAlliance, The Environmental Educators Exchange (EEE), and The Greater Houston Energy Education Collaborative (GHEEC), as well as providing expertise, web space and web mastering for the Houston Area Physics Teachers (HAPT) and The Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH).
HUNSTEM promotes Project Based Learning (PBL) through on-line development of STEM activities that can be used in the classroom or for after-school programs.
HUNSTEM promotes collaboration between Informal Science Education (ISE) organizations, K-12 schools, collages and universities, STEM professional societies and others, all centered around success in STEM.
Teacher Enhancement Program
The UHD Teacher Enhancement Progam is an inquiry-driven, integrated science and mathematics-based program that provides educational enrichment opportunities for teachers.
The UHD Teacher Enhancement Program provides content knowledge through "Hands-On" and "Minds-On" experiences that are inquiry-based as well as innovative instructional strategies for integrated science and mathematics.
The UHD Teacher Enhancement Program has continued to grow in terms of course offerings, certifications/endorsements and teacher participation since it's inception in 2004. In the first year, 4 teachers enrolled in the program which provided professional development in inquiry-based instuction for biology and mathematics teachers.
The following year, 2005, the program received College Board endorsement to offer Pre-AP Certification in biology, chemistry and mathematics. In addition, participants earned both professional development and gifted and talented (GT) credit hours. In 2006, the program increased the enrollment from 17 to 59 participants as compared to 2005.
Currently, the Teacher Enhancement Program offers four certification/professional development institutes:
-Pre-AP Biology.
-Pre-AP Chemistry.
-Pre-AP Physics.
-Pre-AP High School Mathematics.
START SUMMER PROGRAMS
The UHD START Summer Program is an integrated Science and mathematics inquiry-based program, which provides educational enrichment opportunities for students entering the 9th - 12th grades, who are interested in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
This program will benefit students who intend to take AP and /or Honors courses in Science and Mathematics. It is sponsored by the UHD Urban Center for Student Success and funded by the U.S. Army Research Office.
Students successfully completing the four-year START Summer Program will be invited to attend UHD with annual renewable scholarships based upon satisfactory performance and membership in the UHD Scholars Academy.
All applicants have completed 8th grade prior to entering the UHD START Summer Program and must have an overall "A" average in their academic courses.
Students taking this innovative program must be willing to devote entire three weeks of their summer vacation. Participants who complete this program are provided with a $600 stipend.
